Since students’ everyday experiences often run counter to the science needed to explain them, teaching about force and motion is often a challenge. As force and motion are closely interrelated, it is difficult to talk about one without referring to the other.
Our Force and Motion module provides concrete experiences and an inquiry-based route to learning about Newton’s laws of motion. This module’s activities are designed to build understanding of these concepts in a logical sequence, while not introducing too many concepts at once.
Students complete 9 investigations:
Force Weighs InStudents learn how to measure a force and examine Newton’s third law as they study interactions.
Tow TruckStudents learn that the force required to keep a toy truck on an inclined plane increases with steepness.
Investigating MotionStudents design a procedure to investigate the motion of a ball rolling on a simple track.
We’re on a RollStudents use a ball and ramp system to investigate Newton’s first law.
Steering the BallStudents place movable barriers in an effort to direct a moving ball through an obstacle course.
Moving Faster and FasterStudents investigate acceleration and create simple velocity/distance vs. time graphs.On the LevelStudents use a simple accelerometer (bubble level) to investigate acceleration.
Force and AccelerationStudents investigate acceleration in orbiting systems, an application of Newton’s Second Law.
