Contextualized Instruction

Connected Mathematics® features an innovative STEM Problem Format that promotes curiosity and challenges students to think critically. Each problem follows a three part structure:

The Initial Challenge introduces the core mathematical problem and provides open access for all students

The What If…? section deepens mathematical understanding by having students explore variations in quantities, contexts, or strategies

The Now What Do You Know? links the new ideas to prior learning and prepares students for future concepts

The Launch-Explore-Summarize instructional model guides every lesson - making it easier to plan, teach, and reflect effectively.

Launch: Begins the lesson presenting the initial challenge and connecting it with students' prior knowledge and understanding

Explore: Suggested questions and pedagogical strategies guide instruction through observation and interaction with individuals and small groups working on the problem

Summarize: Facilitates classroom discussion to reach the problem's mathematical goal

Hands-on materials and collaborative experiences including embedded card sorts, models, matching, games, and experiments keep students actively engaged.
