Science and Global Issues: Biology

Developed by SEPUP at the Lawrence Hall of Science, this full-year biology program connects science to students’ lives through issue-oriented, active learning that inspires curiosity and critical thinking.

Why Lab Aids Science?

Issue-Oriented Approach

Students engage with real-world challenges like ecosystems, global health, GMOs, and biodiversity, analyzing trade-offs and designing possible solutions.

Active Learning

Instructional design and unique equipment make science tangible, meaningful, and manageable for teachers.

Equitable Curriculum

Thoughtfully structured to include diverse perspectives, ensuring every student feels represented and engaged.

Hands-On Every Day

Students actively investigate phenomena, collect data, and apply science and engineering practices to develop solutions.

Teacher Resources and Professional Learning

Comprehensive Teacher Editions provide day-to-day instructional guidance, while professional learning sessions, led by experienced educators, immerse teachers in the program’s pedagogy through hands-on experience.

A Curriculum for All Students

By weaving inclusion strategies throughout, SGI: Biology ensures that students from all backgrounds see their perspectives valued in science and engineering, enriching the classroom experience.

A Curriculum for All Students

Science and Global Issues: Biology was thoughtfully and intentionally designed with a framework for equitable learning, and a variety of inclusion strategies are implemented to engage all student populations.

The types of questions that a scientist asks, and the types of problems that an engineer tries to solve, are influenced by what they think is important to investigate. This often depends on their backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and perspectives. This is why it is essential for people from a wide range of backgrounds and with varying experiences to engage in science and engineering—to be sure that science and engineering respond to the interests and needs of all, and that the ideas of a diverse population are actively solicited, included, and valued to enrich explanations and arguments.
