Contextualized Instruction
Connected Mathematics® features an innovative STEM Problem Format that promotes curiosity and challenges students to think critically. Each problem follows a three part structure:
- The Initial Challenge introduces the core mathematical problem and provides open access for all students
- The What If…? section deepens mathematical understanding by having students explore variations in quantities, contexts, or strategies
- The Now What Do You Know? links the new ideas to prior learning and prepares students for future concepts.

- Launch: Begins the lesson presenting the initial challenge and connecting it with students' prior knowledge and understanding
- Explore: Suggested questions and pedagogical strategies guide instruction through observation and interaction with individuals and small groups working on the problem
- Summarize: Facilitates classroom discussion to reach the problem's mathematical goal
