Switching from LTI 1.0 to ClassLink
Thinking of switching rostering methods from Schoology/Canvas/LMS (LTI 1.0 external tool) to ClassLink? This page describes the process of switching the rostering method you utilize with the Lab-Aids Portal. This page does not apply to LTI 1.3 integrations.
Overview
Some districts may want to switch from LTI 1.0 to ClassLink for the following reasons:
-
Class Data: The LTI 1.0 rostering method creates completely separate accounts for each teacher and student that are not related to each other by classes, since LTI 1.0 does not pass class data to Lab-Aids. ClassLink can share class data, which means that teachers can utilize those features that rely on class-relationship data (assigning homework and tests).
-
Streamlining rostering methods within the district.
-
Change in district-provided platforms.
Pros
-
Teachers can see their class rosters within the Lab-Aids Portal, and therefore can see which students have Portal accounts and what content they have been assigned.
-
Teachers and admins have access to student analytic data, such as time spent on books.
-
Teachers can assign homework and assign assessments from within the Lab-Aids Portal.
-
Classlink also provides SSO (single sign-on) via ClassLink’s LaunchPad for both teachers and students.
Cons
-
Rosters in ClassLink must be updated regularly and accurate, since we only ingest user account data via ClassLink.
-
We cannot manually add user accounts for special scenarios, such as substitute teachers.
-
Teachers need to assign books/content to students, but this is a fairly simple process. See our how-to guide for more details.
-
All user data is lost when previously-rostered accounts are deleted. This includes teacher-created tests and notes, highlights, and bookmarks added to books by teachers.
Process
-
Customer shares rosters with Lab-Aids via ClassLink Roster Server so that both parties can ensure Lab-Aids has access to the correct classes and accounts.
-
Lab-Aids removes existing student and teacher accounts created via the LTI external tool. Existing accounts in the
-
Lab-Aids Portal need to be removed because we use different account types for ClassLink users that cannot be converted over for the new rostering method. Lab-Aids syncs classes and accounts via the OneRoster API credentials shared via ClassLink.
-
Both parties verify classes and accounts synced to the Lab-Aids Portal correctly. District/school admins work with teachers/staff to ensure users can log into the Lab-Aids Portal.
-
District admins assign licenses to school, and school admins assign licenses to teachers.
-
Teachers assign content to students.
Timeline
Up to one week. We recommend performing this switch during the summer (June - early August) to avoid disruptions to teacher and student access. This process can be started before rosters are available for the following school year.
