Issues and Science Earns Recognition in CURATE Review

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE PROGRAM RECOGNIZED FOR ALIGNMENT, ACCESSIBILITY, AND STRONG CLASSROOM SUPPORT

Lab-Aids® is proud to share that Issues and Science, Third Edition Revised (SEPUP®/Lab-Aids, 2020) has been reviewed through Massachusetts’ CURATE (Curriculum Ratings by Teachers) process, a statewide initiative designed to help districts identify high-quality, standards-aligned instructional materials.

Developed for grades 6–8, Issues and Science was evaluated by Massachusetts educators for its alignment to state Science and Technology/Engineering standards, classroom usability, and support for diverse learners. Reviewers highlighted the program’s strong instructional design, comprehensive teacher supports, and purposeful integration of science and engineering practices.

“I was impressed by the comprehensive teacher support materials, which include detailed instructions and background information that would benefit both new and experienced educators,” shared one Massachusetts reviewer.

The CURATE report notes that Issues and Science:

• Aligns to most Massachusetts grade 6–8 STE standards and integrates Disciplinary Core Ideas with Science and Engineering Practices
• Uses real-world, issue-driven phenomena to engage students in sensemaking and inquiry
• Provides robust accessibility features, including digital read-aloud, translation tools, and differentiated instructional strategies
• Supports teachers with clear routines, flexible pacing guidance, and a research-based assessment system

In addition, the program was recognized for its emphasis on hands-on learning, varied ways for students to demonstrate understanding, and representation of diverse scientists and perspectives throughout the curriculum.

CURATE reports are designed to support local decision-making and do not replace district-level curriculum review. Lab-Aids encourages districts to use the CURATE findings as part of a thoughtful, equity-centered selection process that reflects local needs and priorities.
