WORKSHOPS:
Research, Innovate, and Find Solutions for California's Erosion Issues
From Middle School Issues and Science, Redesigned for the NGSS
Date: October 20, 2023 | Time: 8:00-9:15a | Location: Mesquite E
Students model the phenomenon of sediment movement in a river using a stream table that provides evidence for how geoscience processes change Earth’s surface. They examine the role of energy transfer and its impact on landform formation. Students participate in an engineering design opportunity planning and designing a system that reduces erosion. Come experience this hands-on interactive session and take home your own Lab-Aids mini stream table!
What is the Cost of Recovering Copper to California?
From Middle School Issues and Science, Redesigned for the NGSS
Date: October 20, 2023 | Time: 9:30-10:45a | Location: Mesquite E
What happens to my cell phone when I throw it away? Come explore this interactive session that examines the real-life issue of circuit board waste. Students investigate the use of reactions with three metals for reducing copper waste and reclaiming copper from a used copper etching solution. Students use data from their investigation and text sources to develop an evidence-based argument for which metal is the best choice for recovering copper from the waste solution.
Understanding Natural Selection through the Lens of Antibiotic Resistance
From Middle School Issues and Science, Redesigned for the NGSS
Date: October 20, 2023 | Time: 12:30-1:45p | Location: Mesquite E
Students use a model to explore the cause-and-effect relationship between inappropriate use of antibiotics and the phenomenon of the evolution of antibiotic resistance. As they use the model, students use mathematical representations to support their analysis of patterns and trends in the results and to develop explanations for how and why the population of bacteria is changing.
Come experience this hands-on interactive session that you can immediately utilize in your classroom!
California Fisheries in Crisis- Sustaining the Commons
From Science and Global Issues: Biology
Date: October 20, 2023 | Time: 2:00-3:15p | Location: Mesquite E
How common resources are used by individuals is a critical part of global sustainability. Setting parameters for common resource use can be a critical tool in sustainably managing a group’s resources. In this interactive workshop from the new Science and Global Issues: Biology program from SEPUP, you will engage with a model of how human choices affect the sustainability of a particular resource—the fish population of a fictitious lake—and the potential effects of different actions on individuals, the greater community, and the resource itself.
