WORKSHOPS:

Exploring Energy: Hot Bulbs
From Middle School Issues and Science
Date: October 20, 2023  |  Time: 8:15-9:15a  |  Location: Palm Room

Students apply their understanding of the concepts of energy transfer and transformation to compare the efficiencies of two different types of light bulbs. They do so by measuring the amount of thermal energy produced by the two bulbs, applying the law of conservation of energy, and calculating how much of the electrical energy supplied was converted into light energy. Come experience this interactive session that models real-world issues while showing students how to analyze and interpret data to make evidence-based decisions.

Not Your Usual Elementary STEM Workshop: Make a Ride for One of Your Toys
From Tinkering Labs
Date: October 20, 2023  |  Time: 10:45-11:45a  |  Location: Salon C

This hands-on workshop challenges participants to make a vehicle to move a toy or other small object using motors, wheels, wires, and other equipment. This activity is one of 10 engineering design challenges in Tinkering, a STEM curriculum for grades K-5 that comes complete with equipment, lesson plans, assessments, and embedded support for ELA. Lesson samples and literature will be distributed.
