Join us for the Virtual San Bernardino Instructional Material Conference.

Lab-Aids will present workshops for both the Middle School NGSS and High School Curricula.

Breeding Critters - More Traits
Middle School | Issues and Science Reproduction Unit
January 6, 2021
12:00pm - 1:20pm

Students model and explain additional patterns of inheritance as they explore cause-and-effect relationships for additional traits of the critters. These patterns help them model and explain the wide variation that can result from sexual reproduction. The activity provides an opportunity to assess student work related to MS-LS3-2.ts.

Investigating Endangered Species
High School | SGI Biology: Ecology Unit
January 7, 2021
12:00pm - 1:20pm

Participants will work through an online investigation that models how students investigate characteristics that make it likely for a species to become invasive and examine case studies of introduced species that have become problems of the United States. Participants will examine the species' effects on the economy, environment, and human health, and identify characteristics that makes each of these species a threat. Finally, they take opposing roles in assessing a proposal to introduce a non-native species into a specific location. In class, students would use a writing frame to practice supporting a claim with evidence and reasoning. Online tools and resources will be provided. This activity is from the Ecology unit of the Science and Global Issues: Biology program from the SEPUP group at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. It provides opportunities for students to work towards mastery of the following CA High School Biology Performance Expectations:

  • HS-LS2-7. Design, evaluate, and refine a solution for reducing the impacts of human activities on the environment and biodiversity.*
  • HS-LS4-6. Create or revise a simulation to test a solution to mitigate adverse impacts of human activity on biodiversity.* [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on designing solutions for a proposed problem related to threatened or endangered species, or to genetic variation of organisms for multiple species.
