Why are we learning this? Teaching Waves in the Relevant Middle School Classroom
The interactive science journal is where scientific inquiry meets the common core. The science journal allows educators to provide science instruction in a hands-on, inquiry based manner while incorporating literacy into their daily curriculum and assessment. While typically known as a science journal, this notebook is more like a student’s personal possession, as it is a compilation that reflects all they have done in their curriculum. Skills such as observing, analyzing, making inferences, and recording data are all executed in conjunction with the science journal. Pairing an interactive lab with a writing component provides an opportunity for students to synthesize information and use evidence to draw conclusions. The journal is a way for educators to assess knowledge and skills and to meet the diverse needs of all students. Furthermore, it enables educators to have the knowledge, skill, and opportunity to collaborate to improve instruction and student achievement in a respectful and trusting environment
