SEPUP course structure

A full year using Issues and Science | Designed for the NGSS generally consists of 5-6 units that can be taught in almost any order, based on your school's scope and sequence. Each unit then is structured with several activities, sequenced intentionally to engage the students, build on the storyline, and incorporate the three dimensions. Though the types of activities vary, the structure is consistent so that students recognize what to do and more time is spent on learning.

Unit at a glance

Take ten minutes to watch an overview of one unit from Issues and Science -- Land, Water. and Human Interactions. The first five minutes covers the unit's anchoring phenomenon, the unit issue, and a brief visit to each lesson, while the second half takes a deep dive into one activity. This is a great way to quickly see how SEPUP's new NGSS units are structured.

There are three text resources for teachers - each with their own important and unique role. The Student Books are the only place to review everything the students will see - this content is not repeated elsewhere. The Teacher Editions guide the day to day with specific instruction around each lesson. Finally, the one Teacher Resources provides broader instruction that applies to the program as a whole.

The Teacher Resources is a great place to start reviewing the program and includes SEPUP’s approach to teaching and learning, what it looks like to implement it, specific strategies for diverse learners, literacy tools, the assessment system, and material lists.
