Join Lab-Aids at the NABT 2021 Professional Development Conference this November 11-14 in Atlanta, GA.

Visit us at Booth #516 and in our two hands-on workshops.

We look forward to seeing you all there. Meanwhile take a look at our Science and Global Issues: Biology program here.

WORKSHOPS:

The Power of CRISPR
PRESENTER: Maia Binding
Curriculum Specialist, SEPUP Group, Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. (Alternate presenter is Dr Ben Koo, SEPUP Director.)

The CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system is a powerful tool with many potential applications, from treating human disease to improving crops to make them more nutritious, drought-tolerant, or resistant to pests. Experience The Power of CRISPR high school activity series, developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science in partnership with the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley, where students use CRISPR to edit bacterial genes, gain an understanding of how CRISPR works, and consider ethical issues in gene editing applications.

Participants will use hand held UV lights to view samples of E. coli bacteria that have been transformed from red to green glowing cultures by use of a specific Cas-9 gene that is then activated to trigger the gene editing process.  Participants will view video and other digital ancillary tools designed for the course to help students better understand steps in the process, and applications of CRISPR technology, including treating sickle cell disease.

Looking for Patterns in Species Diversity
PRESENTER: Maia Binding
Curriculum Specialist, SEPUP Group, Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley. (Alternate presenter is Dr Ben Koo, SEPUP Director.)

In this hands-on workshop, participants will look for patterns in data on species diversity in coral reef ecosystems to try to determine cause and effect relationships that might explain the patterns. A look at distribution patterns for four groups of organisms in the U.S. -- birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians -- provides a better understanding of how ecosystem interactions affect patterns of biological diversity. Supports NGSS HS-LS2-2.

This workshop provides a first look at materials from the new Science and Global Issues: Biology, 3rd Edition program, developed by SEPUP for the NGSS.
