MODELING THE INTRODUCTION OF A NEW SPECIES
Friday, November 13, 2020
Time: 4:50p - 5:35p EST | ☼ Live Workshop
From the Middle School Issues and Science Ecology Unit
Presented by Cindy Lilly | Science Teacher - Ocean Bay Middle School, SC
Through an online simulation, students will develop a model for an ecosystem and then introduce a new species to explain how this new component in the system affects the flow of energy and cycling of matter throughout the ecosystem. Learn about Lab-Aids’® new Remote Learning Activities and discover ideas for implementing hands-on curricula into an online platform. The activity provides an opportunity to assess student work related to MS-LS2-3. Student Sheets | Teacher Pages
VISUALIZING AN ELECTRIC FIELD
Friday, November 13, 2020
Time: 5:45p - 6:30p EST | ☼ Live Demo
From the Middle School Issues and Science Fields and Interactions Unit
Presented by Lisa Yemma | Science Teacher - Slavens Elementary School, CO
Come learn about Lab-Aids’ new Remote Learning Activities and discover ideas for implementing hands-on curricula into an online platform. Through an online simulation, students will be able to visualize the interaction between static charges and investigate questions about what affects the direction and magnitude of forces in an electric field.
NGSS-FOCUSED SUMMATIVE CLASSROOM ASSESSMENTS OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL LEARNING
Friday, November 13, 2020
Time: 4:05p - 4:55p EST | ☼ Live Workshop
From SEPUP/Lawrence Hall of Science
Presented by Maia K. Binding | Curriculum Developer at SEPUP
Explore classroom-tested benchmark assessments and scoring guides designed to assess students' three-dimensional learning related to middle school performance expectations for life, physical, and Earth science.
INVESTIGATING EMBRYOLOGY
Saturday, November 14, 2020
Time: 1:00p - 1:45p EST | ☼ Live Workshop
From the Middle School Issues and Science Evolution Unit
Presented by Cindy Lilly | Science Teacher - Ocean Bay Middle School, SC
Through an online simulation, students analyze and interpret skeletal and embryological images to identify patterns of similarities and differences across species that look very different as mature animals. Students identify patterns of similarities throughout developmental time to infer evolutionary relationships not obvious in the mature animals. Learn about Lab-Aids’® new Remote Learning Activities and discover ideas for implementing hands-on curricula into an online platform. This activity provides an opportunity to assess student work related to MS-LS4-3. Student Sheets | Teacher Pages
INSIDE THE ATOM
Saturday, November 14, 2020
Time: 2:00p - 2:45p EST | ☼ Live Demo
From the High School A Natural Approach to Chemistry
Presented by Brandon Watters | Science Teacher - Vernon Hills High School, IL
Through an online simulation, participants explore the inner workings of atoms, using an Atom Model to discover how to figure out the number of subatomic particles in a given atom. Learn about Lab-Aids’ A Natural Approach to Chemistry program, designed for all students to learn chemistry.
CELL DIFFERENTIATION AND GENE EXPRESSION
Sunday, November 15, 2020
Time: 11:30a - 12:15p EST | ☼ Live Workshop
From the High School Science and Global Issues: Biology Genetics Unit
Presented by Donna Parker | Science Teacher - Dublin Coffman High School, OH
Students often have trouble conceptualizing how selective gene expression works. In this workshop, participants will use digital manipulatives to see how to teach this concept and explain how it is connected to genetic engineering, using concrete modeling. A follow up reading shows how this technology is used in food production, making selective gene expression a relevant and engaging sustainability issue. Discover ideas from Lab-Aids® for implementing hands-on curricula into an online platform. From the Science and Global Issues: Biology program from SEPUP and Lab-Aids®. Student Sheets | Teacher Pages
USING CLIMATE PROXIES TO LEARN ABOUT EARTH'S CLIMATE HISTORY
Sunday, November 15, 2020
Time: 12:15p - 1:00p EST | ☼ Live Demo
From the High School EDC Earth Science Atmosphere and Climate Unit
Presented by Lisa Martin | California State University, Long Beach, CA
Experience an interactive model from Lab-Aids® EDC Earth Science, an NSF-supported high school program that uses an active data-oriented approach. How can scientists tell what Earth’s climate was like thousands of years before human measurements? This activity simulates the use of fossil ocean foraminifera to determine relative warm and cold periods in the past 200,000 years. Student Sheets | Teacher Pages

Issues and Science: Designed for the NGSS middle school program uses broad socio-science issues to provide context for relevant and connected phenomena within each unit. Not just an event or process that links scientific content - the issues are the big idea that have meaning in students’ lives and are anchored in real-world events. These issues connect the why for students, “Why does this matter?”
Issue-oriented science forms the foundation of SEPUP’s curriculum materials and it is the only secondary science program to do so.
Science and Global Issues: Biology
Make Biology come to life in your classroom. Students see how their studies relate to their own lives and how it impacts their environment and the planet.
The five units in this program look at the issues of human impact on ecosystems, world health, genetically modified organisms, and biodiversity - complex issues that have no simple solutions. In each SGI: Biology unit students are challenged to reason scientifically while applying their understanding of the main concepts. Students gather and analyze associated evidence, review possible actions to address the issue, and develop arguments from evidence while considering the trade-offs of each decision.
A Natural Approach to Chemistry
A Natural Approach to Chemistry gives students the opportunity to do chemistry, not just read about it. In this program students learn the science to understand how chemistry is relevant to their lives.
Three differentiators set A Natural Approach to Chemistry apart from other more traditional programs - use of spiraling content, a focus on doing science by blending hands-on investigations with the 5E model of instruction, and creating an accessible context for the content by using examples from the human body and the environment to make the learning relevant and meaningful.
EDC Earth Science engages students by challenging them with thought-provoking investigations and questions they hear in the news or at their family dining table. It is designed around the belief that students are capable of rigorous and in-depth explorations in science when given adequate support, structure, and motivation for learning. As a consistent part of their instruction, students of EDC: Earth Science regularly perform data-intensive investigations set in real-world contexts.
Cancer and the Cell Cycle 908S | Supplementary
Students play a board game that simulates the cell cycle, with each student in a group of four taking the role of a specific type of cell. As they progress through the cycle, students learn about the phases and events of the cycle.
Accommodates unlimited classes, each with eight groups of students.
For more kits and modules please see our catalog below in the Materials tab.
Modeling & Mitigating Stream Processes #446S | Supplementary
Students model the phenomenon of sediment movement in a river using a unique mini stream table that provides evidence for how geoscience processes change Earth’s surface. In Part A, students investigate how the changing energy of flowing water erodes and deposits sediments to create common landforms. Part B is an engineering design challenge where students use design criteria and constraints to design and test erosion-control structures. Based on the results of their initial testing, students redesign and retest their structures.
Accommodates two to three classes, each with 8 groups of 4 students.
